Little Lakers

Welcome to the Little Lakers!

On Tuesday, May 26th we will officially begin the swim season. All Little Lakers will begin the season with evaluations by coaches. This evaluation will help the coaching staff determine the ability of your child. Some may move up immediately to the lanes with Lakers while most will stay in Little Lakers to develop their skills and become a stronger swimmer. Our hope is to progress as many Little Lakers as possible to Lakers by the end of the season.

Coaching Staff

Our Head Little Laker Head Coach is Rachel Svercl. Rachel has extensive experience with Little Lakers and is excited to continue to lead the program this season.

The First Week

Evaluations will be conducted the first 2-3 days of practice. The first week will involve the kids adjusting to the water and getting comfortable. As they progress, they will start putting their heads under water and eventually they will move to strokes and side to side breathing.

Practice Times

The Little Lakers will be divided into four groups for evening practices (thru June 17th). Each group will practice for 30 minutes. Once morning practices begin (June 18th), swimmers will be divided into two groups. *There are limited spots for evening Little Lakers. Evening practice for Little Lakers is NOT in addition to morning practice; it is for swimmers who cannot make morning practices.

Housekeeping

Evaluations

As previously stated, during the first week of practice, swimmers will be evaluated by the coaches. Veteran parents will be present and we are willing to answer any questions!! Please do not interrupt the coaches to ask questions during practice.

Attire/Swim suits

Please feel free to purchase a team swim suit this season if you would like to. These are not required, but many of the younger kids like them. Please note – thermal/wet suits can be used for practice, but not for meets!

Goggles are required for Little Lakers. However, please send your swimmer with goggles that DO NOT cover the nose as it is harder to learn to breath.

Swim caps are not required, but are encouraged.

Weather

The water WILL BE cold the first couple of days/weeks of practice. Please use your best judgement on whether your child will participate. We want this to be a fun experience and understand that cold water can be very uncomfortable for a new swimmer so please do not feel that we are relying on you to push your child to practice in cold conditions. Weather updates will be posted to Facebook and if Kim is able to get an email out – one will be sent. As a rule of thumb – if there is thunder and lightning within 20 minutes prior to your practice, practice is cancelled. If kids are at practice, they will be removed from the pool and deck and that practice will be canceled. Little Lakers will be sent home with a parent.

Health

Keeping in line with our school system - please do not send your child to practice if he/she has been vomiting, running a fever, or has had diarrhea in the last 24 hours.

Behavior

If your child is waiting for his/her practice to start – they should be sitting near you or with you. They should not be running on the deck or sitting on the edge of the pool with their feet in the water. This can be disruptive to the coaches and swimmers involved in the current practice.
